When the day is done, chores are finished, and the ponies have been put to bed, we like nothing better than to unwind with a good movie. And from Westerns to dramas to thrilling adventures, there are no better movies than those horse-centric films from both yesterday and today. We’ve put together a quick list of some of our favorite, must-see movies that focus on our equine obsession.
1. Seabiscuit (2003)
Based on the true story of the legendary racehorse Seabiscuit, this film tells the story of a small, scrappy horse who becomes a symbol of hope during the Great Depression. The film features excellent performances from Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, and Chris Cooper, and captures the thrill, commitment, and absolute heart of horse racing.
2. Black Beauty (1994)
This classic story of a beautiful black horse and his journey through various owners has been adapted for film many times, but this 1994 version is one of the most memorable. The film is faithful to the original book and features excellent performances from Sean Bean and David Thewlis.
3. The Horse Whisperer (1998)
Robert Redford directed and starred in this powerful drama about a horse trainer who helps a traumatized young girl and her horse heal from a devastating accident. The film explores themes of healing and redemption, and features stunning cinematography of the American West.
4. War Horse (2011)
Steven Spielberg directed this epic tale of a young boy and his beloved horse, who is sold to the British army during World War I. The film is an emotional rollercoaster, featuring incredible performances from the cast and some of the most impressive horse stunts ever captured on film.
5. The Man from Snowy River (1982)
This Australian Western tells the story of a young man who must prove his worth as a horseman to win the heart of the woman he loves. The film features breathtaking cinematography of the Australian wilderness and some of the most thrilling horse-riding scenes ever put to film.
6. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
This animated film tells the story of a wild stallion who fights for his freedom and the freedom of his herd in the American West. The film features beautiful animation and an unforgettable soundtrack by Bryan Adams.
7. Hidalgo (2004)
Based on the true story of a long-distance horse race in the Arabian Desert, this film stars Viggo Mortensen as a cowboy who enters the race with his mustang, Hidalgo. The film is a thrilling adventure, featuring stunning desert landscapes and heart-pumping horse racing scenes.
8. National Velvet (1944)
Velvet Brown: "Mr. Ede's new horse. I'm in love with him."
Mr. Herbert Brown: "You're a fickle woman. I've heard you say that about other horses."
This classic film tells the story of a young girl who trains a wild horse and enters him into the Grand National horse race. The film features a wonderful performance from Elizabeth Taylor and is a heartwarming tale of perseverance and determination.
9. The Black Stallion (1979)
This visually stunning film tells the story of a young boy who befriends a wild Arabian stallion and trains him for horse racing. The film features stunning cinematography and a powerful score by composer Carmine Coppola (Francis Ford's dad).
